Hanyu cherry blossom festival Sky Sports Park

This year there is no Hanyu Cherry Blossom festival because they seem to have a pest problem at the main site’s cherry blossoms, at the Kasai Irrigation Canal. However, there will be at least two other cherry blossom festivals in Hanyu this year. Information for both are contained in this post, with the main focus on the 15 day festival at Hanyu Sky Sports Park.

Hanyu Sky Sports Park Sakura Matsuri

Hanyu Sky Sports Park

Sakura Matsuri means cherry blossom festival. And in the absence of the “Hanyu Cherry Blossom Festival” the “Murakimi Cherry Blossom Festival” at Hanyu Sky Sports Park takes center stage. However, this is one of these places where the ‘festival’ just means the period of the bloom. Although, they may organize some food trucks or stalls once the sakura start to bloom. The park is best known for its long roller slide, pictured above. The top of that slide affords a great view of the sakura!

Iwase Cherry Blossom Festival
There will also be a cherry blossom festival in the Iwase area of Hanyu. It is just an one day festival, this weekend. Initially the cherry blossoms were expected early this year, so the festival was planned for Sunday March 24th. But given that the sakura ended up being late to start blooming there is a chance there won’t actually be any cherry blossoms in bloom by Sunday! But who knows, they might pop suddenly. The festival is on at the Iwase Community Hall from 1 to 4 pm, but they also have lanterns on the trees so you can see them lit up at night. View on Google Maps.
