Todabashi fireworks are one of the biggest in Saitama. What makes them particularly special is that they are run in conjunction with Itabashi fireworks. The Itabashi fireworks launch the same night on the far side of the Arakawa River in Tokyo.
Todabashi fireworks during the pandemic
In 2020 they were scheduled for the much earlier time of May 23rd (they are usually held in August) so as not to interfere with the Olympics. However, due to the Coronavirus outbreak, they were cancelled. In 2021, they have postponed the date from May 2021 to November 6th 2021. However, in summer 2021, they decided to completely cancel both the Toda and Itabashi fireworks. In 2022, Toda city announced early on that there will no fireworks again this year.
When are the 2022 Todabashi fireworks?
For the third year in a row, the Todabashi fireworks have been cancelled.
In a normal year
They launch approximately 12,000 fireworks (in a normal year), including starmines and shakudama. Moreover, they set the displays to music. They normally have fireworks that explode into the face of a famous character. For example, characters from anime / cartoons. In 2019, the highligh was the Yokai Watch characters. Even if the event does go ahead in 2021, it is likely that it will be on a much smaller scale than normal.
The fireworks are launched near Toda’s rowing race course. Prime viewing along the riverside. You can walk from Toda Park station. The Itabashi Fireworks are held in conjunction with Todabashi. They estimate 52,000 spectators view on the Itabashi side and close to 50,000 on the Toda side (in a regular year). You can normally reserve a viewing spot at a price on the official website (grey details box below) or view for free from along the river or nearby viewing spots. There are about 80 festival stalls on the Todabashi side of Arakawa river. It is likely that there will be no spectators allowed near the launch site in 2021.
