Market Terrace

Market Terrace Kawagoe – when the Market Terrace opened in rural Kawagoe a few years ago it was near impossible to get a seat unless you were prepared to wait hours. Which I wasn’t. But while the excellent value for money buffet restaurant retains a full house even on the rainiest of weekdays, the queues aren’t nearly as bad as they were during its opening year. My faithful lunch buddy and I went to check it out last month.

Few places have as good a reputation as Market Terrace, Kawagoe. And even fewer still live up to their reputation across the board. Its easy to see why they get at least 6,000 visitors every month. There are only a small handful of things to fault about Market Terrace Kawagoe, but by and large it is a safe bet for a healthy affordable all-you-can-eat dining experience.

First to the pro’s…

Value for money

Market Terrace Lunch buffet

The lunch buffet at Market Terrace is only 1800 yen per adult, 1000 yen for children and 600 yen for preschoolers. Children under three years old eat for free! It might not sound particularly cost saving, but what if I told you there is no time limit? And that drinks are included?

Inside Kawagoe Market Terrace

Yes, for the time the restaurant is open you can help yourself to as much or as little as you want from their food and drink selection all for just 1800 yen. (Alcohol not included). More often than not “tabehodai” all-you-can-eat and “nomihodai” all-you-can-drink is set to a two hour period. Market Terrace lets you stay as long as you want during their opening hours which are from 11 am to 3 pm for lunch.

Market Terrace Dinner buffet

Likewise the dinner buffet has no time limit. And the restaurant is open even longer for the dinner session: from 5 pm to 10.30 pm (last entry at 9 pm). However, the dinner buffet is a little more expensive, but just as good value for money, particularly on weekdays. Weekends cost a bit more.

Alcohol is not included in the cost of the buffet lunch or dinner. But they do sell alcohol at a bar within the restaurant. They have a selection of Coedo beer, Asahi beer and wine. They also have non-alcoholic beer, wine and cocktails. At night you can get alcoholic cocktails, but they don’t have that option at lunch time.

Great Selection

There is a great selection of food for both the dinner and the lunch menus. You can choose from several different type of dishes and there is a great range of salads, soups and even a variation of rice.

There are desserts too. The desserts include mini sized cake (of which you can take as many as you can manage!), yogurt and fruit options. They also have ice-cream you can dispense yourself from a proper ice-cream machine.

The drinks menu is pretty good for the type of place that it is. They have four jugs of juices, plus a water jug, and one with water and lemon. There are different types of teas and coffees. Coffee options include latte and cappuccino. The teas and coffees are from a machine, but they’re not bad.

Locally Sourced + Healthy Options

The vast majority of the food used at Market Terrace is Saitama sourced ingredients and food. Furthermore, a lot of it is from nearby farms and / or the food wholesalers next door. Freshness is just one plus for the restaurant on the quality front, another is that they have healthy options.
