Each October, Senshoji temple in Yashio city have an autumn event. Last year it was an Autumn Festival, this year it is “Autumn Lights” (Aki no Tomoshibi). Senshoji Temple is a prominent Jodo sect temple in Japan, founded in 1600. At the one-day experiential festival, families can create paper-bag lanterns, take part in a temple quiz rally and enjoy a beautiful lantern illumination alongside the traditional Ojuya Buddhist service in the evening.
Senshoji Autumn Festival
This year the festival is on Saturday 17th October 2026. It coincides with the traditional autumn Buddhist observance known as the “Ojyuuya Hōyō”. “Ojyuuya Hoyo” honors ancestors and prays for families safety. Wishes written on the handmade lanterns will be included in the Ojuya memorial service and recited by the temple’s chief priest. On the day they have a few different activities, but not nearly as many as in 2025, when it was more of a festival. However, there is a paper bag lantern workshop again this year. It is free and anyone can participate in. Moreover, you can take your lantern home with you afterward. Families can also join the Senshoji Quiz Rally, where participants explore the temple grounds while learning about the temple and its customs. A number of recipients who answer all questions correctly will receive a small dagashi gift set.
