I debated over the years as to whether or not to add this local hydrangea spot to the blog, because the park in which they are located is very small. But having shared an event (bread expo), that is happening this week, across the road from the small park and learning that they put a brand new playground in the park this year (2026), I decided it was time to share these hydrangea. The photos in this post were all taken on different dates, but always in the month of June, over the years. As you can hopefully see in the photos, thanks to a red footpath, these hydrangea look particularly photogenic. At least I think so. But make no mistake – this is a very small park. You know the neighborhood type, in the middle of a residential area, with just a baseball field, a playground, toilets, a walkway and some trees.
Local hydrangea spot in Sakado

Clicking on a photo will enlarge it. The hydrangea are located on the north side of the tiny park. They fringe the beautiful red footpath. I will not speculate how many bushes there are, but they are dense enough that when the flowers are in full bloom, they look really colorful. They are healthy and mature hydrangea, so presumably someone is looking after them. There are shades of blue, purple, pink and white. On the numerous visits I’ve paid over the years, I have never met anyone else taking photos of the hydrangea. Nor have I ever seen anyone use any of the facilities in the park. But I usually visit weekday mornings. There maybe more action in the park on the weekend or later in the day. And possibly the new playground is drawing more people. For the record, there are some mature cherry blossom trees in the park too.
I am out of Japan at the moment, but I will be back in June. I hope to get a photo of the new playground and add it to this post.
