The National Bread Expo Japan at Tsutaya Sakado Yahata branch

At the most unlikely of locations, a local Tsutaya bookstore, there will be a five day bread expo (aka fair) from Wednesday May 27th to Sunday May 31st. Randomly, I have actually been to this bookstore a few times! It has a Starbucks in it where you can peruse the books over a coffee. There is also a Yaoko supermarket in the same building. I visit when the hydrangea are in bloom in the little park across the road. This is the second time the National Bread Expo will be held at this Tsutaya. The first time was in Autumn and it proved so popular they are having another, bringing together an irresistible lineup of local breads from every corner of Japan.

The National Bread Expo

From Hokkaido’s rich dairy‑based loaves to Kyushu and Okinawa’s uniquely flavored specialties, this five‑day event, in the Tsutaya Yahata Sakado branch, is a dream come true for bread lovers. Each region’s creations showcase local ingredients, craftsmanship, and traditions, making the expo not just a food event but a delicious cultural journey. Visitors can expect a rotating selection of breads each day, meaning every visit offers something new to discover. There are 52 stores participating with a total of 130 different types of bread. Some items sell out quickly, so checking the in‑store boards or flyers, and arriving early, will give you the best chance of grabbing your favorites. Whether you’re hoping to rediscover a nostalgic hometown flavor or try something entirely new, the expo promises plenty of delightful surprises.
